Shepparton is approximately 181 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. The industries that have traditionally supported the area are agriculture and manufacturing. It is the epicentre of infrastructure and civic services for the region. Shepparton is known for its cohesive culturally and ethnically diverse community, rich sporting culture, food, wine and warm weather. Shepparton provides numerous opportunities for participation in organised sport for all ages and abilities and houses a large modern sports precinct. There is an extensive network of bush tracks for those who enjoy walking and cycling. For those interested in the Arts there is the annual ‘Shepparton Festival’, the local theatre group (STAG) and the modern Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) which holds an enviable permanent collection of ceramics as well as a diverse range of travelling exhibitions. The local performing arts centres (Eastbank and Westside) host a variety of touring musical and theatre productions. Shepparton is home to the bi-annual National Piano award. Shepparton has numerous primary schools, a special needs school that supports students from age 3 – 18 years, four government secondary colleges, a Catholic secondary college, private grammar school and a Christian College.
In April 2017, the Victorian Government announced that it would allocate $20.5m towards developing a long-term plan to transform education in Shepparton. The new school “Greater Shepparton College (interim name)” which is due to open in 2022 will merge four secondary schools and accommodate between 2700 and 3000 students, ensuring they have more educational opportunities, choice and support.
Goulburn Valley Health (GVH) is a 300 bed acute and extended care Health Service. Along with the main base hospital in Shepparton there are also smaller facilities in Rushworth and Tatura. The primary catchment includes the areas of Greater Shepparton and Strathbogie, with the secondary catchment including the Western half of Moira Shire and the eastern and southern portions of Campaspe Shire to cover a total population of 120,000.
The communities served by GVH are some of the most culturally and linguistically diverse in Victoria, with nearly a quarter of the population speaking a language other than English.
The region also experiences higher than stage average socio-economic disadvantages which leads to multiple interrelated and complex health issues.

GVH has a full range of rotations on offer for non-core Intern training and Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY2). They work with trainees to design programs that suit the trainees career aspirations and help them get onto accredited training programs.

GV Health is the main referral health service for the Hume region. Services include a 24-hour Emergency Department, Surgery, Medical Services, Women’s and Children’s Services, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care, Mental Health, Outpatients, services at Tatura and Rushworth, and community-based health programs.
Shepparton Private Hospital is a part of the Ramsey Health Care group and has a range of clinical services, including unplanned and elective surgery.
