Our Training Region

HUME REGION

The Goulburn Valley Regional Training Hub works across the mid-North region of Victoria. Our footprint stretches from Echuca to Wangaratta with our main base being in Shepparton.

The region is known for its great wineries, rivers, camping spots and skiing. This is where Melbourne residents come for weekends away.

Like many rural and regional areas of Australia, this region experiences challenges in recruiting and retaining appropriate health workforce personnel and is an area of medical workforce need for all specialties.

PREVOCATIONAL TRAINING

Along with the hospital-based intern programs based at Goulburn Valley Health and Northeast Health Wangaratta, our region is also home to two Victorian Rural Generalist Intern programs which rotate interns through GP clinics in addition to their core hospital rotations. The Lodden Mallee program is based in Echuca Regional Health with rotations to Echuca Moama Family Medical Practice, and the Murray to Mountains program has interns in Northeast Health Wangaratta and Albury with rotations to GP clinics in small towns that feed into those health services.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

In the Hume region there are currently two specialties that can be completed from start to finish. These being Psychiatry and General Practice.

The full pathway of Psychiatry training can be done at Goulburn Valley Health with the choice of four specialties; Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, General Adult Psychiatry or Psychiatry of Old Age. Contact us for more information.

General Practice training can be undertaken either as an independent trainee with ACRRM or through Murray City Country Coast, the GP Regional Training Organisation for this region, with either RACGP or ACRRM. Confused about GP training? Go here to find a summary of some key information about all the different options for GP training.

The structure of the Victorian health system is centralised in terms of service provision and decentralised in terms of health service governance and management. Consequently, these health services hold the majority of training positions in the state and then rotate to rural health services for short rotations which can be anywhere from 3 to 12 months.

The Regional Training Hubs take the view that good quality training can be done in rural areas and are advocating for a “flipped model” where rural health services hold the training positions and rotate trainees for those core components of training that can’t be covered rurally. There are many structural challenges and it is likely that this will take many years to change, but it is certainly a change worth fighting for!

Why go rural?

By choosing to study and do placement in a rural and remote location, you you will benefit from hands-on, face-to-face, up close and personal experience, and this is by far the biggest learning advantage you will have if you choose to go rural.
